When you start something new, it helps to seek advice from those who've gone before you. That way, you can use their experiences to surge ahead, rather than wasting time repeating their mistakes.

For organisations only now bringing in data science and analytics for the first time, this advice is of particularly relevance.

To quote Isaac Newton: "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."

I have my own network of giants, whose advice has been invaluable in getting me to where I am as a data scientist. However, building such a network takes time, especially at the beginning of your journey, when you need them  most.

That's why, I created "Value Driven Data Science".

"Value Driven Data Science" is a twice-monthly podcast for businesses and data scientists who are looking for ways to maximise the value of their data and data teams. In each episode, you will learn from business leaders and experienced data professionals how to use data science to create business value, and grow your in-house data capabilities.

The first episode goes live this Friday, in which I speak to Amanda Aitken, an educator with the Actuaries Institute about building data science capability in data-focussed teams. Future episodes in Season 1 also include interviews with:

* Executive coach and organisational development expert Tim Davey on leading a technical team and transitioning from individual contributor to team leader; and
* Dr Fei Huang of the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies at UNSW on fairness and anti-discrimination in machine learning.
