Hi ,
If you’ve ever moved house, you’ve probably had the experience of finding a new plumber (or doctor, or dentist…).
Plumbers are essential and becoming one takes years of training. But to most people, all plumbers look the same. And in a big city, there are dozens competing for work.
So how do you choose
between them?
It’s likely your decision will be based on something other than ability. Like price or Google search ranking.
Even though they possess an in-demand skill, most plumbers are
commodity workers.
Here’s the thing...
Data science is also an in-demand skill that takes years of training to learn. But to many employers,
one data scientist can also look the same as another.
To avoid being seen as a commodity, you need to stand out.
How can you do that? One way is to create a niche for yourself.
I recently spoke to software engineer turned data scientist Hendrik Dreyer, on my podcast, Value Driven Data Science, about how he created a niche for himself by bridging the communication gap between data science and engineering. The episode goes live this Thursday.
Talk again soon,
Dr Genevieve Hayes.
