Hi ,
2022 will go down in history as the year the world became obsessed with AI. And its no coincidence the biggest game changers to
emerge from this space - text-to-image generators Dall-E and Stable Diffusion, and ChatGPT - all involve written language.
As humans we experience the world via our five senses. Language allows us to share those experiences with others. But writing allows us to transmit our thoughts through time and space.
In his memoir, On Writing, Stephen King describes writing as the purest form of telepathy. By describing an idea, a writer can transmit that idea to future readers without ever being together in the same room.
It's for that reason writing is so important.
For decades, people have equated AI with humanoid robots (who typically want to take over the world).
But as the meteoric rise of
ChatGPT proves, if there's to be one branch of data science to rule them all, it's shaping up to be NLP.
If you're looking for an area of data science to focus on in 2023, NLP is definitely the place to be.
Talk again soon,
Dr Genevieve Hayes.
