Did you see the gorilla?
Here's the thing...
Where you focus your attention determines what you see.
This is great news for stage magicians, who rely on selective attention to make their tricks work. But for everyone else, focussed attention can come at the cost of missing other, potentially vital pieces of information.
This also
applies to data scientists when analysing data.
In my last post, I wrote about the phenomenon of "black swan" events - events that are believed impossible... until they're not.
It's impossible to focus your attention on seeing something you genuinely can't imagine exists.
But sometimes just being open to the fact that "unknown unknowns" can exist is enough to spot the gorillas in your
data.
Talk again soon,
Dr Genevieve Hayes.
p.s. I recently had the opportunity to interview professional data scientist and amateur magician, Dr Peter Prevos, on my podcast "Value Driven Data Science". You can listen to the interview HERE.
