Hi ,
Gold currently trades for around $2000 US/oz. (or $100 AU/g). Yet,
one gold bar is virtually indistinguishable from another.
If you have a gold bar and want to sell it, the only way you can compete against other sellers of gold bars is on price.
You are at the mercy of the market.
Gold may be valuable, but it’s also a commodity.
Here’s the thing...
Data science skills are also highly valuable.
Yet, most data scientists have similar qualifications, skills and experiences, making them virtually indistinguishable from one another.
This puts them at the mercy of employers.
It's also how the paradoxical situation of data scientists, with in-demand skills, who can’t find work, can occur.
Just because your skills are valuable doesn’t mean you’re not also a commodity.
But how do you move away from being a commodity?
Well, that’s a topic for another day.
Talk again soon,
Dr
Genevieve Hayes.
p.s. I recently had the opportunity to talk to independent business guru Jonathan Stark on this very topic. You can find the interview HERE.
