Here's the thing...
Boxer Mike Tyson once said, "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth."
As people, we recognise the frailties of our fellow humans and make backup plans in case they occur at inconvenient times.
The old theatre saying, "the show must go on", for example, is made
possible by understudies, who can step in at a moment's notice, if a key performer is unwell.
Yet, AI also has its weaknesses. So, why not make backup plans for them, too?
The soccer
fiasco previously described might have been avoided by the inclusion of a manual override switch that allowed a (remote) human camera operator to step in, in the event of a malfunction.
AI is now making possible technological solutions that only existed in science fiction 5 years ago. But these solutions are far from infallible.
Before placing your faith (and reputation) in the hands of AI, take a moment to ask yourself, "what's your Plan B?"
Talk again soon,
Dr Genevieve Hayes.
p.s. Thanks to Chris Dolman for bringing this example of AI going hilariously wrong to my attention. We discussed this in a recent episode of Value Driven Data Science, on the topic of "How to Avoid an AI
Scandal". You can listen to the full conversation HERE.
