In short, whatever life throws at you - no matter how bad - your response should always be "good".
That's not to say you should deny the reality of a situation or pretend to be happy when you're not.
Rather, it's about accepting the situation for what it is and looking for ways to turn it
to your advantage. Search for what's good, rather than getting bogged down in what's not.
As a data scientist, it's unlikely you'll ever face many of the situations encountered by Willink over the course of his military career.
But that doesn't mean data science isn't challenging in its own way, nor that most data scientists couldn't benefit from adopting the philosophy of "good".
- Didn't get the new software tool you wanted? Good! You don't have to worry about transition costs.
- Project you were working on got
cancelled? Good! You can reinvest the time in understanding the needs of the business.
- Couldn't get as much data as you wanted to fit your model? Good! Simple is usually better.
- Analysis didn't work out as expected? Good! You have the opportunity to learn new techniques.
A career in data science is a marathon, not a sprint,
and some days will be better than others.
But as long as you stay in the game and continually strive to be better, things will ultimately turn out:
GOOD!

Dr Genevieve Hayes.
