Hi ,
In her book, Quit, former professional poker player turned decision scientist Annie Duke, makes the
observation:
"When your identity is what you do, then what you do becomes hard to abandon, because it means quitting who you are."
Which, although written before the recent AI explosion, seems all the more relevant in the age of ChatGPT.
So many data scientists have constructed their identities around their ability to write code and fit models.
Yet, with the rapid rate of growth in generative AI, as well as low-code and no-code ML tools, it's not hard to envisage a future where these skills become obsolete.
And for data scientists who have constructed their identities around performing these tasks, their identities will cease to be.
But data science is about so much more than just writing code and fitting models. It is about creating value
and getting results.
And creating value and getting results will never go out of style.
As a data
scientist, no one cares how you produce results. All that matters is that you produce them. Construct your identity with that in mind, and your identity will last for as long as you do.
Talk again soon,
Dr Genevieve Hayes.
