Hi ,
"I love doing data prep", said no data scientist, ever.
But have you ever asked yourself why?
CEO of Proof Analytics, Mark Stouse's take on the matter is it's because data prep gets in the way of instant gratification.
Humans crave instant gratification. It's why we love fast food, next day delivery and get rich quick schemes.
But unlike model building, where you
get the satisfaction of having a working model at the end of the day, with data prep, all you get to show for your work is - data.
There's a good reason why Kaggle competitions are frequently designed to allow people to skip this step - people want to get straight to the good stuff.
Here's the thing...
Given data scientists are so hooked on
instant gratification, why do so many act as though their managers aren't hooked, too?
Managers don't want to wait 10 months to receive analysis results. They want to receive them *now*.
And the longer you make them wait, the less valuable those results are likely to seem.
When assessing model performance, most data scientists focus primarily on accuracy.
Yet, the time to deliver results matters, too.
Talk again soon,
Dr Genevieve Hayes.
