Hi ,
One thing I love about the Christmas break is that I finally have time to catch up on all the podcasts, books, articles and videos I meant to read/view/listen to throughout the year but never got around to.
This year, I had 23 fantastic guests on Value Driven Data Science, all too good to miss (or listen to only once). So, if you're looking for something to enjoy during the long Summer afternoons (or long Winter afternoons, for our Northern Hemisphere friends), there's plenty for you to choose from.
However, if you're struggling to decide where to
start, here are five of the most popular episodes of 2024:
1. Episode 36: Sequential Decision Problems
Most data science models assist with single decisions. Yet, in real life, one-off decision-making is very rare. Our past decisions influence our future ones. That is, our decision-making process is sequential.
Guest Warren Powell is a world expert in sequential decision analytics and, in this episode, he
discusses his practical approach to solving such problems.
2. Episode 30: Cause and Effect Data Science
Every data scientist knows correlation does not equal causation. But few understand what that means for the models they build and the work that they produce.
In this episode, guest Mark Stouse will open your eyes to the immense potential of causal AI.
3. Episode 41: Building Better AI Apps with Knowledge Graphs and RAG
It's been two years
since ChatGPT first turned the world upside-down and it's now becoming hard to remember how we all coped before generative AI.
Yet, despite all the progress that's been made since ChatGPT's release, we still haven't figured out how to solve genAI's one major drawback - it makes stuff up.
In this episode, guest Kirk Marple discusses a workaround for this problem involving knowledge graphs and RAG.
4. Episode 40: Making Data Science
Teams Profitable
It doesn't matter how good you are at the technical side of data science if the models you build are unable to create value. Yet, few data scientists learn business skills as part of their training.
In this episode, guest Douglas
Squirrel helps rectify this by discussing a range of simple techniques data scientists and their managers can use to make data science teams profitable.
5. Episode 33: Making the
Shift from Data Scientist to Datapreneur
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go out on your own as a data scientist but never known how?
In this episode, guest David Shriner-Cahn shares advice on how data scientists can escape the
corporate world and make the transition from employee to entrepreneur.
You can check out these episodes at the links above or find them on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music or Spotify.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,
Dr Genevieve Hayes
p.s. I am going to be taking a break for a few weeks but will return for 2025 in mid-January. Thank you for all your support throughout 2024.
