Hi ,
“Why is data science failing inside so many companies?
Why can’t the champion modellers model and forecast their own contributions?
Do they know what they’re there for?
This should be their golden time.”
Late last year, ProofAnalytics.ai CEO Mark Stouse posed
these questions to me and they got me thinking.
We are currently living through the dawn of the Age of AI. Why isn’t it also the Age of the Data Scientist?
Having worked in data-centric roles for my entire career, the answer seemed clear to me.
It’s because many data scientists are so focused on the technical side of their jobs - which they typically excel at - it's very hard for them to look beyond that and see the whole other side of data science that’s necessary to grow a career.
That used to be me, too. But
I got lucky, and as I explained in Monday’s post, a CEO took the time to explain to me where I was going wrong.
The conversation described above led to Mark and I gathering two more global recognised analytics leaders, “The Dean of Big Data” Bill Schmarzo and EY’s Global Head of AI John Thompson, to record a “tough love” wake-up call especially for data scientists who haven’t been
as lucky as me - delivering advice few data scientists receive from the leaders in their own organisations.
In this extended (1-hour) season premiere episode of Value Driven Data Science we discuss:
- Why focusing purely on technical metrics like accuracy and precision is sabotaging your success — and what metrics actually matter to
business leaders.
- The critical mindset shift needed to transform from a back-room technical specialist into a valued business partner.
- How to present data science insights in ways that drive action — and why your fancy graphs might be hurting rather than helping.
- Why “data driven” isn’t enough, and how to adopt a “data informed” approach that delivers real business outcomes.
